HOLY WATERS

EPISODE II
SCIENCE BEHIND SUPERSTITIONS
WHY DO WE CONSIDER SOME SOURCE OF WATER IS HOLY- IRRESPECTIVE OF RELIGIONS !

Before I continue I’d like to share a few things with you. After reading the first episode some of my friends said that it would only encourage people to follow the superstitions. The reason why I decided to write about this was not to tell people that these superstitions are true and they should try to follow it , but to find out what exactly our ancestors tried to convey to the future generation, and to find out what exactly was the truth behind such superstitions. The things that I share with you here are not based on my own conclusions but have been scientifically analysed and proved. The original concepts behind these beliefs and their scientific explanations are not what can be called as positive thinking or unidirectional thinking. It can be considered as lateral thinking.

It is an analysis of a concept which had been deformed - O.K!

WHY DO WE CONSIDER SOME SOURCE OF WATER IS HOLY- IRRESPECTIVE OF RELIGIONS !

There are so many rivers that flow across the world. But very few manage to have clean water and remain in pure state. Every religion for example say Islam, Christianity or Hinduism has some faith
that certain source of water is pure and holy and best used for prayers. Please note that I am not here for a discussion whether the religion itself a superstition. What is the speciality of those waters- that’s the topic.

The Ganges is one such river. The sewage wastes, factory outlets are sent out to the river through out the year. Being the holy river of India, corpses and the ashes of the dead are let into the water. The Hindus believe that their dead will attain eternal bliss if the ashes are immersed into the river.

The Indian ancestors believed that the river is pure. They said that the river originates from the mountains and forests that are abundant in herbs with medicinal qualities. Hence the water has the quality to cure diseases and destroy germs.

Is ther any truth behind it? Let us see…

Before the discovery of water purification, those days ships used to carry and store drinking water in drums on board while sailing overseas. Sometimes it might take months for a ship to reach a harbour. The drinking water stored in the ship gave out a bad odour after a few days. The palatability of the water changed. Later it was found that , when some source of water such as from the ganges was carried the keeping quality increased. When scientists were anxious to know what makes those waters to have more life, they tested and found that the water contained an enormous amount of a special organism, discovered as Bacteriophages. A bacteriophage is not a Bacteria but a particular type of virus that only eats bacteria. Bacterias have the capacity to reproduce and multiply into a million in a very short time and as they multiply they deterioate the organic matter and emit gases. This the reason why any organic matter decays after a certain time. When a tomato or a meat or any other organic matter is refridgerated the Bacterial reproduction is restricted . This is the reason why frozen food remain edible for a long time.

Every one life whether human or animal is surrounded by millions and millions of bacteria. Nature has given us many check and one such way to control them is by way of bacteriophage virus. Abundant presense of these good viruses ensures certain extend to control the reproduction of harmful bacterias and helps these waters to have better keeping quality.

That’s the reason why they are considered as PURE and HOLY.
